TOURNAMENT DETAILS
CONTEST LIMITATIONS
VIRGINIA HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE (VHSL) & NORTH CAROLINA HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION (NCHSAA) PARTICIPATION GUIDELINES
In accordance with VHSL Rule 54-8-1, the VHSL has established contest limitations for volleyball. Each school may choose from the following options for regular season play:
> 20 dual matches
> 18 dual matches + 1 invitational tournament
> 16 dual matches + 2 invitational touranments
Invitational tournaments may not exceed two consecutive days of play, and teams are limited to a maximum of 15 sets per tournament.
In addition, schools participating in the ESHS must not have any homeschool athletes on their roster.
NORTH CAROLINA TEAMS (NCHSAA MEMBERS)
Per NCHSAA rules, teams from North Carolina are limited to a maximum of four matches in a single day. We will structure your schedule accordingly to ensure compliance with your state regulations.
HOMESCHOOL & OTHER NON-VHSL ELIGIBLE TEAMS
Due to restrictions with VHSL, we are hosting a separate event on the same day at the same time at the same location for non-VHSL eligible teams. In order to combine all teams into one event in the future, VHSL needs to be convinced that homeschool associations are following all VHSL guidelines. If you are a homeschool team, have homeschooled athletes on your team, or are not VHSL-eligible for whatever reason and want to be part of the solution so that all teams may participate in one event, we encourage you to communicate with VHSL to find out how your teams are able to comply with VHSL rules, to ensure VHSL that your teams are doing so, and, if already doing so, to let them know. If you need contact information, please feel free to reach out to us.
COACHES
An individual may not be listed as the head coach for more than one team participating in this event. Aka, each team must have a unique head coach available the day of the event. This ensures that every team has a dedicated coach present and available throughout the competition.
TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES
We will provide scorekeepers. However, each team will be responsible for one person to help work the score table when the team is playing. One team’s person will do libero tracking while the other team’s person will flip the score. This can be done by a parent on the team as well as any student. And you can alternate who does this job throughout the day.
FORMAT
Formatting described below is subject to change depending on the final number of teams registered per division.
DIVISIONS
The ESHS will have 2 divisions of Boys Varsity, 4 divisions of Girls Varsity, 2 division of Girls Junior Varsity.
The ESHHS will have 1 division of Boys Varsity, 1 division of Girls Varsity, and 1 division of Girls Junior Varsity with potential for the Girls Varsity and JV to be combined into one division.
WARM UP
Shared time is not timed and is the time that it takes to clear the court of existing teams and new teams establishing court. Approximately 2 minutes.
For the first two first two matches of the day on each court, you will start at the time scheduled. Each team will get six minutes of warm up time on court. After the first two matches, if the court is on time, warm-up time will stay six minutes for each team. If the court is more than fifteen minutes behind, then teams will get only four minutes each of split court time.
The team listed first on schedule will be the “home” team and pick which bench while the “visitor” will call a coin toss. We will NOT be switching sides.
DIVISION GAME FORMAT
Every team is guaranteed the number of sets equal to 5 matches. Aka, each team will play a minimum of 10 sets. The maximum number of sets played will be 15 (12 for teams limited to 4 matches) as to fall in line with the VHSL set and match limits for tournaments.*
We aim for all divisions to have 4 pools of 4 teams. However, the format for each division will depend on the number of teams with the potential of pools having 3 teams.
*Per NCHSAA rules, teams from North Carolina are limited to a maximum of four matches in a single day. We will structure your schedule accordingly to ensure compliance with your state regulations. We will do the same for any schools who shared their 4-game limit during registration or by the deadline of ADD.
POOL PLAY MATCHES
Pool play will take place in the morning followed by playoffs in the afternoon.
Pools of three will play three sets to 25 no matter what. No cap. Win by two.
Pools of four will play the best two out of three sets. The first two sets will be to 25 with the third set, if needed, to 15. No cap. Win by two.
PLAYOFF MATCHES
After pool play, teams will be reseeded and will finish the day with playoffs. Pool winners will be determined by match percentage. In case of a two-way tie, head to head results will be used. In case of a three-way, set percentage and then point differential will be used. If still tied, there will be a coin flip.
Matches will be the best two out of three sets. The first two sets will be to 25 with the third set, if needed, to 15. No cap. Win by two.
DISCLAIMERS
Formatting is heavily dependent on the final number of teams registered per division. Because of this, formatting is subject to change with the creation of the schedule.
While not an exhaustive list, final registration totals can affect the following:
> The final number of divisions.
> The final number of pools within a division.
> The final number of teams within a pool. We aim to have 4 teams per pool. However, some pools might end up with 3 teams.
> Teams from the same conference being in the same pool. When scheduling, we do our best to avoid this. However, it is not always possible.
> Although teams select their preferred division at the time of registration, the final division placement per team is subject to change.
> Divisions have potential to be split into two sub-divisions depending on final registrations, competition levels, and/or other considerations.
